World in Peril

Sweet Hunny Pie Puppy Dude - Chillin
With our world crumbling in around us, what do we have to look forward to? Paychecks getting smaller. Job security out the window. Car payments & bills stacking up. A home mortgage about to push us over the edge. Wouldn't it be nice to be a dog - or a teenager, without responsibility or consequence. Ehh, I think I'll go for a run and then settle on my couch next to my dog with a glass of wine. Ahh, the life.

  1. I often have wistful memories of my childhood or early teenage years as responsibility-free times. Then I have to step back out of the hollywood smoke-machine my mind creates around these sepia images and realize that my teenage angst nearly rivaled my adult anxieties about the future. When we were young, we worried about what we would do with our lives, who we would meet, where we would live, how we would find ourselves. We longed for the security and freedom of adulthood. But as adults, we STILL worry about the future, what we'll do if we lose our jobs, how we will survive if our relationships don't work, and the inescapable, unanswerable question: who am I? Basically, as we age, the same feelings remain, just the questions change a little, and the answers always remain elusive.

One of my favorite Walt Whitman quotes from "Song of Myself" always makes me realize that the now we live in is all we have, so we should try to celebrate it. I know, tough to do, but it's something, at least.

"I have heard what the talkers were talking, the talk of the
    beginning and the end,
But I do not talk of the beginning or the end."

"There was never any more inception than there is now,
Nor any more youth or age than there is now,
And will never be any more perfection than there is now,
Nor any more heaven or hell than there is now."
